Part One

Rollie stared at Leo. He couldn’t believe what he had just been asked.

"Please Rollie. This is the only way I can think of to get the evidence I need to put Bennett away." Leo pleaded.

"Let me get this straight. You want Lucinda and me to go to this L’Amour spa and pretend to be newlyweds. Then you want us to pretend to have a major blow-up so that Bennett can seduce Lucinda and then try to blackmail her?" Rollie asked.

"Yes. That way we can get physical proof that it is Bennett who is blackmailing the mayor’s new wife."

Rollie sighed and rubbed his head as he walked over to one of his worktables. He looked up as the door opened and Angie, his assistant, walked in.

"Hey Rollie. What’s up?" she called out.

Rollie couldn’t help but smile as he looked at the young woman moving towards him. "Not much. Leo just wants our help again."

"Aargh! What does he want this time? A fake bomb, an exploding briefcase, what?" she asked, her curiosity piqued as always despite her best efforts to remain aloof.

"I don’t think you’ll want to hear it. Personally, I wish that I hadn’t heard it." Rollie replied.

"Oh come on Rollie. It’s not that bad of a plan." Leo exclaimed, popping up into Angie’s line of sight.

"Uh huh, yeah, right, sure." Rollie said. "Well, I guess I’d better call Lucinda and ask her if she’s willing to assist us in this little jaunt."

So saying Rollie walked to the phone and called Lucinda asking her to come over and hear Leo’s plan.

Upon her arrival Leo started to outline the situation. He explained that someone was blackmailing the mayors new wife with a slight indiscretion she had been involved in after she and the mayor had had a big fight. He then told them it was believed that a man named Bennett was the one doing the blackmailing. Finally, he told Lucinda what parts he needed her and Rollie to play.

After hearing the plan Lucinda smiled and said, "Sounds like fun. Where’s the honeymoon going to be?"

Leo smiled, happy to be getting the assistance he needed, "It’s at L’Amour spas."

Suddenly Lucinda’s smile vanished. "Oh no!"

"Oh no? I don’t like the sound of that. What do you mean, oh no?" Leo cried, panic edging into his voice.

"I can’t do it. Matt Leclaire, the man who runs the spa, knows who I am. We really don’t like each other and he would be quite willing to reveal the truth about me. And no, before you ask, make-up and prosthetics won’t work. For some reason Matt’s always been able to tell it was me. No matter what I did to disguise myself he always saw through the facade."

Leo groaned and put his head in his hands, "Now what am I supposed to do. We’ll never be able to get the goods on him. Lucinda, there’s no one else we can get to take your place in this scheme. Nobody who’d be believable that is."

As she sat and listened to Leo’s comments Angie couldn’t help but think to herself, "What am I? Chopped liver?" She knew it wasn’t a deliberate insult on the part of her friends. It was simply that none of them ever thought of her in any role but that of good friend. They never thought of her as a real actress, able to play roles other than the ditzy girlfriend of some two-bit hood. They focused on her abilities with computers and special effects and nothing else. Sometimes she felt like everyone thought of her as nothing more than ‘one of the boys’. Most of the time it didn’t bother her but occasionally, like now, it got under her skin and made her want to scream with frustration. But, as always, she kept these feelings to herself. She kept her true feelings about the people and situations in her life silent.

"We’ve got to think of some way to do this!" Leo exclaimed. His eyes were hard, a look of determination was on his face. All of them sat and thought, trying to think of another way to catch Bennett. Suddenly Lucinda’s face lit up as an inspiration hit her.

"I think I know the perfect person to play Rollie’s wife. She’s beautiful and physically the two of them would make a striking couple. She’d be more believable as Rollie’s life than I would because she would know and understand what he was talking about."

"So, when can we meet her?" Leo asked.

Rollie and Angie looked on. Almost identical expressions of doubt and fear on their faces, though for very different reasons. For Rollie he feared that the woman Lucinda was talking about would be someone so completely different from him that he would be bored out of his mind with her company by day’s end. He doubted that there was any woman in the world who would ever be able to fully understand and fit with him. As for Angie she feared that this woman would cause Rollie to fall in love with her and then hurt him as had happened before. She doubted the likability of this woman Lucinda described and was quite prepared to despise her.

"You already have." Lucinda answered.

"What! Well, who is she, then?" Leo inquired.

With one simple word Lucinda stunned them all, "Angie."
